![]() ![]() With 200mVp-p sinus input signal I get around:Ĭlean channel 5.2 Vp-p max clean signal, 7 V max, 3. Well, not so hard, like AC-15īack to channel levels, I did some measuring yesterday and this is what I got at the output switch ( RLY2, or prior to Master volume) Also tames highs in clean channel a bit, although I like clean channel better without NFB ( It has that 3D sound hard to describe. NFB really tames and tightens overdrive channel. You get two channels that let you range from glassy clean to aggressively crunchy, so you're ready to take on your favorite styles in Orange style. I tried both Top cut and Cross line Master control ( ala Vox, Matchless), but settled for NFB as in original schematics (only 6k8 from 16 Ohm tap), because The TH30 combo packs its tube-fired power plant plus a 12' speaker into a chassis that's small enough to easily fit in your trunk or back seat. Clean volume pot becomes Dirty gain 1 pot when switched, which I try to remedy with that switched second pot in the ground leg of the Clean volume pot. ![]() It is up and running, does not sound bad at all, clean channel is very bright though ( Ice picking bright ) and dirty channel is really good and goes from crunchy to lush singing distortion over the top Only downside is channel interaction, i.e. 3x 12AX7 tubes ( 2 preamp, 1 LTPI ) and 2x EL84 Everything else built from scratch actually, as in second schematics I posted. The thing I have not mentioned is that this is conversion of an old tube console of which I am using only the cool antique box, chassis and output transformer. And other parts, as well, if there is something that should be made differently. Would really appreciate some input regarding this part of circuit. But I need some kind of channel level adjusting in case I ditch it. I am not sure whether I should keep this PrePI Master at all ( when in Dirty mode I have two volume controls essentially in parallel). I decided to wire channel outputs via relay to keep them separated ( and to address volume difference later), and put temporarily pre PI master volume to control levels for time being. The original circuit has channel output mixing via resistors, voltage dividers actually, which formed 150k/470k when clean, and 470k/150k when dirty channel engaged. The part I am not so sure about is effects loop tube (which I don`t need), or if I simply erase it and connect preamp outputs with PI would it be ok? Regarding signal voltages and all. Only now there are not 2 completely parallel channels but rather cascaded/combined gain stages. Two channels in preamp section were pretty similar, so I ditched 1st tube in Dirty channel and rearranged switching to get two channels similar to original. Power amp I copied from Orange Dark Terror amp (similar to many other Orange 2圎L84 amps). ( Conversion of an old build, hence the restrictions). I doubt that my ears are good enough to detect this, but others can and do.This build was an attempt to build something similar to 2 channel TH30 amp, but with two EL84 output tubes instead of four and two 12AX7 less in the preamp. This amp may even benefit more from the type of preamp tubes used, especially in the phase inverter slot. A few reviews that I read claimed that this particular Dark Terror did not really need a boost or OD there is that much of a variety of gain in the 4 gain stages. Where I am not a heavy user of pedals other than modulation types effects, the compatibility of boosts and OD effects was not a main concern for me. I read many reviews on my own Orange Dark Terror before buying it 3 years ago. Here is a link to an older article on the Orange site that lists a few pedals that are more easily adapted to Orange amps. ![]() ![]() For a prospective pedal purchase for OD or Distortion, it might be helpful to read up on the pedal that will be used. There are “healthy” opinions on Orange (maybe some Orange amps) whether they take pedals easily. ![]()
